How to Honour the Blessed Mother on Mother’s Day
Share
We’ve all been there…
realising at the last minute that we still need to buy a gift and scribble out a card
If you are human, you’ve experienced this.
Mother’s Day can get busy with family, food, and fun. But in the midst of it all, we can forget something important:
Mary is our Mother too.
So on Mother’s Day, why not honour both your earthly mother and your heavenly one? We don’t want you stressed and confused about what to do. Therefore, we developed a list of 11 simple and meaningful ways to give Mary a Mother’s Day gift she’ll treasure.
1. Pray the Rosary
One of the best ways to show respect is to do what someone says. One of the best ways to show love is to think about someone.
The Rosary is an opportunity to do exactly that.
Mary has asked us again and again, through countless apparitions, to pray the Rosary. Each decade is a way of sitting with her and reflecting on Christ’s life through her eyes.
Praying the rosary gives Mary the best gift we can offer. Our hearts.
And with that, she will offer it to Christ.
2. Help Someone
Mary is incredibly holy.
But she was also a mum. She spent most of her time caring for her family.
When she was pregnant with Jesus, she made the long journey to help her cousin Elizabeth. For 3 months, she helped Elizabeth prepare for the birth of John the Baptist.
After that, she would have spent many years nurturing Jesus.
Acting like holy Mary is a great way to become holy yourself. Help with chores, give a sincere compliment, and listen to people. A small act of love can go a long way.
Even spending time with your family can be a way to develop a love for your relatives, like Mary had.
3. Adoration
Mother Teresa spent three hours a day in adoration. Mary spent thirty years in the presence of Christ.
When you kneel before the Blessed Sacrament, you share in what Mary lived every day: being close to Jesus. There is no better way to imitate her love.
For 9 months, she bore Christ in her womb. For years, she nurtured him as a baby. And for 30 years, she spent quality time with him.
If we want to be formed like Mary, what better way is there to follow her example and be with Christ in adoration?
4. Create Art
There’s something unique about art…
Art has a way of lifting our hearts toward God. For centuries, Christians have painted, sculpted, and written hymns to Mary.
It has a very powerful ability to raise the mind towards God.
I can tell you from personal experience that when you spend time drawing Mary, you appreciate her much more. When you're focused on drawing every little strand of her hair, it is difficult not to think about this great gift that God has given us.
His own mother.
5. Listen to a Marian Song
Art is more than just paintings.
Music can be art. And it moves the soul in a way that just words can’t.
There are many famous songs dedicated to Mary. Some of my favourites include ‘Salve Regina’, ‘Ave Maria’, and ‘Ave Maris Stella’.
I’ll never forget listening to the Salve Regina once. It was so moving that it led me straight to confession and Mary’s arms. That’s the power of Marian music.
Marian music is powerful. It raises the soul towards God.
6. Subtle Hint of Gratitude
You don’t need a grand gesture. Even a subtle sign like a dash of blue on your clothing, a Marian pin, or placing an image of Mary somewhere visible can say, “Thank you, Mum, for everything.”
Little acts of love matter more than we realise.
7. Bring Flowers to Mary
Mary isn’t just a symbol.
We cannot see Mary, but that doesn’t mean she is just an idea. Mary is a human person. In Heaven, Mary is close to her Son in both body and soul.
And one thing that I can tell you about women is that they love flowers. If a man gives flowers to his girlfriend, you notice the way her face lights up. She instantly is taken aback. She becomes bubbly and appreciative.
Imagine how the most loving and grateful Mother would react?
Even if the flowers die, it is not wasted. That act of love touches the hearts of Mary and Jesus deeply.
8. Reconsecrate yourself to Mary
Consecration doesn’t mean becoming a nun or priest. It means entrusting your ordinary life to Mary’s protection, so she can lead you to Jesus.
If you’ve already made a consecration, Mother’s Day is a perfect time to renew it. If you haven’t, why not begin? Saints like Louis de Montfort and Maximilian Kolbe are famous for their consecration guides.
9. Learn about her
Knowledge can grow love.
When you’re on a date and learn more about your partner, you fall more in love with them.
Reading about Mary in Scripture, theology, or approved apparitions helps us understand her heart more deeply. The more you know her, the more you can love her. And the more you love her, the more you’ll love Christ.
10. Be Loving
The reason you give gifts to Mary is because you're giving a part of your heart.
Mary wants your whole heart. She wants it to be like Christ.
Forgiving others, being patient, and showing kindness reshape your heart into something beautiful.
11. Go to Mass and Confession
Mary offered her son to the Church. It is in the Mass that Christ offers himself to us.
She wants you all to be with her son. And there is no better time on Earth than through the Sacraments. The Eucharist is Christ’s greatest gift to the Church, himself.
A Mother’s Day for Heaven and Earth
Mother’s Day is a time for joy, laughter, and celebrating the women who raised us. But let’s not forget the Mother who gave us a Saviour.
Every act of love offered to Mary touches the heart of Christ. Their hearts are so united that to honour her is to honour Him.
May this Mother’s Day draw you closer to both.
God Bless,
