Why is Spiritual Reading Important

Spiritual reading is a process that the saints swore by.

These are some of the reasons this method is so powerful:

- It fills you with holy thoughts, and helps you to think like God

- It defends you against temptation and sin

- It makes you self-aware and humble

- It's a way that God speaks to us

St Bernard was so dedicated to this practice that he said; "spiritual reading and prayer are the arms by which hell is conquered and paradise won."

Which Saints Did Spiritual Reading

If we had the list of every single saint who did spiritual reading... we'll be here for a while.

So instead, here are the top 5 saints who were masters of this devotion:

1. St Jerome

After Jerome converted into Christianity, he recieved a vision from Jesus telling him to do spiritual reading. St Jerome is one of only 37 Doctors of the Church, and gave us our first Latin Bible translation.

2. St Augustine

The moment which converted a sinner into one of the greatest saints, ended with spiritual reading. After reading the letter to the Romans, he decided to give his whole life to God. Throughout the rest of his life, he continued to do spiritual reading and viewed it as God's little love letters to us.

3. St Dominic

St Dominic spent his life battling against heresy. His weapon to overcome it was the rosary - but he had another tool to grow in faith. St Dominic said that spiritual reading is like milk that sustains his soul. Throughout Australia, Dominican priests now follow his example of 'studying towards God'.

4. St Teresa of Avila

Slow and steady wins the race, and that's certainly true for her. St Teresa would open a book, read and contemplate for a bit. She fused reading and prayer. In the end, it took her 17 years to finish one book - but she grew enormously in virtue.

5. St Pope Gregory the Great

St Gregory saw spiritual reading a bit like eating. People when they read gulp down all their food before they can digest it. St Gregory focused on taking your time to read, because that will help you grow the most in virtue. Unlike speedreading, Gregory tells us that it is this method that will fulfill us.
